In a world that moves at breakneck speed, capturing the details of our daily lives for future generations requires us to slow down just a bit. We think that when we are able to slow down and capture the details of our lives, it can feel fulfilling, exciting and meaningful. We’re talking about making time capsules. Does that feel archaic? Making a family time capsule creates a tangible link between the past and the future – a treasure trove of memories and experiences preserved for your loved ones (or your future self, 10 years down the line)!

Traditionally, time capsules are a collection of items or information, stored in a container, and set aside (even buried underground) for a number of years to eventually be opened in the future. Time capsules can communicate messages, wisdom and memories. For families, a time capsule can be a way to capture the essence of their current lives, values, and interests to be discovered by future generations.

The first step in creating a traditional time capsule is selecting an appropriate container. It should be durable, airtight, and preferably waterproof to withstand the test of time. Today, we can also use technology to create a sort of “digital container” for time capsules that will ensure the preservation of our legacies and family stories for generations to come.

The contents of a time capsule are customizable and can be as unique as the family or person creating it. A capsule can include everything from photographs, memoires, letters and art pieces, to everyday items like a newspaper, or a popular toy.  It can be anything that is meaningful to the time capsule creator or potentially helpful and enjoyable for the future recipient. We recommend that you consider the impact you want to create for the future recipient as part of your creative process. Thanks to technological advancement, we are now able to include information in these digital capsules that were once impossible to capture – videos, voice recordings, and more. Including personal messages or letters to future family members or future selves can be a deeply emotional and profound addition. Predictions about the future or advice from current perspectives can also be intriguing for those who open the capsule. Including materials and information relevant to current happenings also help capture the essence of life.

Deciding where to store the time capsule, when and by whom it should be opened by, is a crucial part of planning and executing the creation of a time capsule. Whether it's buried in a backyard, kept in an attic, or stored on a flash drive or in the cloud, the location should be secure and memorable. Creating a time capsule can be a family affair, with each member contributing something personal. This not only diversifies the contents but also ensures that the capsule represents the entire family.

If you were to create a time capsule for your future self or future family to open, what would you be sure to include? If you created a sort of digital time capsule that could capture parts of your life and your legacy beyond physical objects, what might you add?

A family time capsule is more than just a collection of items; it's a legacy of the present for the future. It captures the spirit and essence of a family's current life, waiting to be revealed to a new generation. In this way, it serves as a bridge across time, connecting past, present, and future in a personal and profound way.
